A new Political controversy has emerged in Pune. And that too, over the color of a wall near Sadashiv Peth. The alleged controversy has sparked debates across party lines. The whole issue began when BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni, along with her party workers, painted a green wall saffron. Kulkarni justified the act as a step to uphold โHindu prideโ. The incident has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from the opposition Uddhav faction leader Sushma Andhare.
Why Did Medha Kulkarni Paint The Wall Saffron?
The alleged wall in question is located near Jnana Prabodhini School. It became the center of attention on December 28th. The wall, then green in color, was adorned with flowers, incense sticks, and a cloth. Local residents expressed concern over this sudden development.

The photos of the green wall quickly went viral after being circulated on social media. As the pictures came to light, Kulkarni visited the location along with BJP activists. She then painted the green wall saffron. This act again was captured by many and widely shared on social media platforms, igniting heated political debate.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kulkarni later addressed the issue. She claimed, โWalls in the city should not be deliberately painted greenโ. She further suggested that the color green could carry โcontentious connotationsโ.

According to Kulkarni, the wall was originally yellow and was recently painted green. She also raised questions about the sudden appearance of flowers and offerings near the wall. The residents stated that these had not been seen before. Kulkarni emphasized that the move to repaint the wall was intended to protect cultural and religious values.

Taking the issue to social media, Kulkarni in a post on X wrote: โYesterday, a WhatsApp message went viral that the street next to the Gyanprabodhini School in Sadashiv Peth was painted green and garlands, flowers, and incense sticks were lit there for worship. I went to that place today to check it out. It was fun to paint saffron on greenโฆThe flowers and offerings were never there before. How did they suddenly appear?โ she asked.
She further wrote โThese types of activities have increased recently, not only in Pune city, but also in many other parts of Maharashtra. These places, which were small in size earlier, are suddenly being occupied now. Let us be vigilantโ

Explaining her decision to paint the wall saffron she said: โWe removed the green color and painted the wall saffron to symbolize Hindu pride. We are proud of this action and will not tolerate attempts to convert such places into โMazaarsโ or start Namazโ.
Why Is The Uddhav Faction Unhappy?
Meanwhile, the incident has drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders in Maharashtra. Uddhav faction leader Sushma Andhare strongly condemned the act. Andhare accused Kulkarni of focusing on trivial matters while neglecting more pressing issues.

Andhare said, โDid the BJP workers in Pune or Medha Kulkarni show the same concern for issues like womenโs safety as they did for painting a wall?โ. โIf public representatives want to engage in such childish acts, they should leave politics and focus on religious workโ.
Many Social media users and political commentators have also condemned the act. They echoed similar sentiments like andhare and questioned the role of a political representative.
