Pahalgam Attack: UNSC Likely To Convene Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

UNSC Visiting India

The EU urged New Delhi and Islamabad to talk and ease tensions

On Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to European Union counterpart Kaja Kallas regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Following their discussion, Jaishankar appreciated the European Unionโ€™s firm denunciation of terrorism in all its forms.

The European Union urged both New Delhi and Islamabad to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to alleviate tensions. This is particularly in light of concerns regarding Indiaโ€™s potential retaliation against Pakistan due to cross-border connections to the attack.

This appeal for restraint came shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio encouraged both nations to collaborate.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked on Friday that Indiaโ€™s current strength lies not only in its military capabilities But it also lies in its unity.

Just prior to the Prime Ministerโ€™s address, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan expressed their support for the Prime Ministerโ€™s stance against Pakistan and terrorism in light of the Pahalgam attack.

PM Modi did not directly reference their comments. But, he reiterated the importance of unity as a fundamental strength of India alongside its military prowess.

The Pahalgam attack, a major incident in Jammu and Kashmir, involved Lashkar-affiliated terrorists who opened fire on a few tourists on April 22, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 individuals, including foreign tourists, and numerous injuries.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a faction linked to Lashkar, claimed responsibility for the terror attack.

In the aftermath of the attack, diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated. This can be seen, with New Delhi implementing several punitive actions. This includes suspending the Indus Water Treaty, reducing the personnel at its Islamabad mission, closing its airspace to Pakistani airlines, and expelling military attaches. In retaliation, Pakistan enacted reciprocal measures and suspended the Shimla Agreement.

US President Trump Announces Revocation Of Harvardโ€™s Tax-Exempt Status

News Desk

Earlier this month, in response to Harvardโ€™s stance, Trump froze more than $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts to the university

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his administration will revoke Harvard Universityโ€™s tax-exempt status. This has escalated tensions with the institution after it rejected his demands for sweeping reforms, including limits on campus activism.

โ€œWe are going to be taking away Harvardโ€™s Tax Exempt Status. Itโ€™s what they deserve!โ€ Trump said on his social media platform.

This announcement comes as Harvard contests a freeze on $2.2 billion in federal grants and $60 million in contracts imposed by the Trump administration after the university refused to comply with various demands, including reforms in governance and changes to admissions policies. The administration also requested an audit of diversity views on campus and the cessation of recognition for certain student clubs. Harvardโ€™s president, Alan Garber, stated that the university โ€œwill not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.โ€

Trump has previously claimed that Harvard is abusing its tax-exempt status, calling it โ€œa disgrace.โ€

โ€œI am sorry for the moments when we failed to meet the high expectations we rightfully set for our community,โ€ Harvardโ€™s interim president Alan Garbar said in a statement.

On April 29, the US government announced investigations into Harvard University and the Harvard Law Review. This is over reports of race-based discrimination within the journal.

Harvard is among several universities facing increased scrutiny from Republican officials amid pro-Palestinian protests. This follows after last yearโ€™s war in Gaza, with multiple Ivy League presidents testifying before Congress over allegations of antisemitism.

The Cambridge-based university became the fifth Ivy League school targeted by the administrationโ€™s pressure campaign. It has also suspended federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania, Brown, and Princeton to enforce compliance with its agenda.

As the tussle between Harvard and President Trump surges, it remains to be seen when the situation resolves.
