Russian And Ukrainian Delegations Meet In Turkiye

Russian And Ukrainian Delegations

But now, President Trump has himself said that he is trying to directly meet with President Putin

Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Istanbul on Friday for direct peace talks for the first time in three years. These peace talks come for the first time since Russia’s invasion began.

The Ukrainian delegation was led by Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov and the Russian delegation was led by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide, Vladimir Medinsky, as both teams sat and discussed. This is in accordance with what Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said. The Ukrainian spokesperson also published a picture of the meeting.

In accordance with the directive issued by the Kremlin, a group of strategic and political advisers will also join these talks. These include senior officials from the defence ministry, the foreign ministry, or the reigning Presidential administration of Vladimir Putin. The directive did not list Putin as one of the officials who would attend the meeting.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s President had given a challenge to his Russian colleague, meanwhile, claiming that in Istanbul, Putin’s attendance would decide whether Moscow was really ready to have negotiations in “good faith”, as reported by The Moscow Times.

Zelensky also gave an assertion that he would sit down only with Putin in Turkey. He has refused to talk about the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine with any lower-level officials.

An earlier report from Reuters said that US President Donald Trump might skip the negotiation talks in Istanbul. This came soon after the Kremlin had published its directive. In the directive, Putin’s name was not present along with the list of the delegates who are attending the talks.

But now, President Trump has himself said that he is trying to directly meet with President Putin. This comes after the latter refused to come.

“I think it’s time for us to just do it,” President Trump said after his four-day trip to Doha and the Middle East concluded.

Trump said that it was no surprise to him. He stated that Putin stayed away because the US President was not there.

He said that “as soon as we can set it up,” he would meet with the Russian President.

“I would actually leave here and go,” Trump said, because his daughter Tiffany had given birth to her first child. “I would actually leave here and go,” he added.
