Russia President Putin’s Peace Terms: ‘…Stop Sanctions…’

Russia President Putin's Terms

This includes a demand that Western leaders write and pledge for the stoppage of the enlargement of NATO eastwards

Russian President Vladimir Putin places a new set of terms and conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. This includes a demand that Western leaders write and pledge for the stoppage of the enlargement of NATO eastwards. It also demands for taking away multiple sanctions, imposed on Russia since the war began.

Russia also wants Ukraine to behave in a neutral way. Also, it wants a resolution given for the problem concerning frozen Russian sovereign assets in the West. Alongside this, it wants protection for its Russian speakers, according to reports.

NATO has said earlier in the past, that it is not going to change its “open door” policy. And it won’t do this only because Moscow demands so.

A report said that Putin, if he sees a tactical opportunity upon the battlefront, he would delve further into Ukraine. According to the report, the Kremlin believed that Russia could keep fighting on for years despite the West’s impositions. This is in terms of sanctions and economic pain.

Another report said that Putin was now not much inclined to compromise on territory. Rather he was keeping to his public stance that he wanted the whole of four regions in eastern Ukraine. Russia has claimed about these things.

The other report added, “Putin has toughened his position.”

US President Donald Trump has continuously said that he wants the worst European conflict since World War Two to stop. President Trump has shown a lot of frustration with Putin in the last few days. On Tuesday, he warned that Putin was “playing with fire” by not obliging to engage in ceasefire talks with Ukraine. This is after a recent attack on Ukraine, aimed at civilians and causing some damage.

An earlier report also came about some terms Russia gave for peace negotiations. This is from April 28. Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov spoke about some terms in an interview with O Globo, a Brazilian news outlet. Russia is insisting on global recognition of its grasp over Crimea. Along with this, it also wants global acknowledgement of having complete hold of a few Ukrainian territories. This includes Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson areas. These are also a part of conditions that Russia set for peace negotiations with Ukraine.
