A Third Shiv Sena on the Horizon???

Maharashtra’s political landscape is once again alive with speculation. There is growing talk that a third Shiv Sena, led by Uday Samant, may be taking shape to quietly reduce Eknath Shinde’s influence. People who track the alliance say the BJP could be encouraging this move as a way to manage Shinde’s shrinking political weight after recent setbacks. If such a split ever materialises, it could mark the beginning of the end for Shinde, whose strength lies in the perception that his flock remains intact.

But this narrative rests on contested ground. The claim has been pushed mainly by the opposition, especially Shiv Sena UBT and the Congress. Leaders like Sanjay Raut and Vijay Wadettiwar allege that the BJP is grooming Samant as an alternate power centre and that he commands the backing of several MLAs. They frame it as the BJP’s long term strategy to keep every ally in check.

Samant, however, has dismissed all of this as political mischief. He insists his loyalty to Shinde is steady and describes their bond as one that goes beyond politics. He was a central part of Shinde’s own rebellion and says he has no reason or intention to lead another.

What adds to the chatter is the visible friction inside the Mahayuti alliance, especially after complaints of BJP workers poaching Sena cadres in some regions. This led to uncomfortable moments, including ministers skipping a cabinet meeting before Shinde and Fadnavis agreed on a public no poaching pact.

For now, the idea of a third Shiv Sena remains an unverified rumour. Yet the tension that fuels it is very real.
