A school bus was damaged and a police picket was set on fire as clashes erupted at Seelampur in Delhi during a protest against the CAA this afternoon
New Delhi: On Tuesday violence has once again erupted in Delhi as angry protesters poured into the streets and pelted policemen with pieces of brick in the Seelampur-Jaffrabad area, located in the territory’s northeast region.
The latest example was a demonstration of widespread discontent with the Citizenship Amendment Act, a law that deals with refugee naturalization and is criticized as anti-Muslim.
In Seelampur the police were heavily outnumbered, and constant tear gas shelling made breathing difficult. The streets were cloaked in a haze and strewn with broken brick.
The mood in Delhi has been tense since buses and police vehicles were set on fire in an outbreak of violence near Jamia Millia Islamia, a well-known university, on Sunday.
The varsity’s students denied involvement, and police action inside the university campus later that evening sparked nationwide agitation.
