Mumbai: The death of a staffer working in the COVID-19 ward of Mumbai’s KEM hospital has stirred huge protests by healthcare staff and other employees outside the state-run hospital.
As per reports, the staffer who died was reportedly unwell and wanted leave.
He had purportedly been denied leave though he had been unwell for four days, died on Sunday night. It hasn’t been determined yet if he was COVID-19 positive or not.t.
Hundreds of doctors, paramedics and others were seen protesting in masks and other protective gear.
Protesting employees have demanded that the deceased staffer’s family should be compensated with a job and financial help.
Disturbing images of body bags on stretchers in the corridors of the hospital have also been highlighted by the protesting staff.
The KEM Hospital, run by Mumbai’s civic body BMC or Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has been stretched to the limit because of the rising virus cases.
Maharashtra, the worst affected state by the virus, recorded 52,667 cases and over 1,500 deaths. the state recorded over 3,000 cases in the last 24 hours.
Of these, Mumbai alone reported 31,972 cases along with over 1000 deaths.
The total cases in India surged to 145,380 including over 60,000 cured/discharged or migrated and 4,167 deaths amid lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
India overtook Iran & China to become the 10th worst affected nation in the world with over 1.5 lakh COVID-19 infections.
