According to Awhad, the Bhima Koregaon case was false and the case should be withdrawn by the new government in Maharashtra
Mumbai: On Sunday the newly formed government in Maharashtra led by Uddhav Thackeray called Maha Vikas Aghadi has taken a bold decision to review Aarey and Bullet train project. After this big announcement in the state NCP leader and MLA Jitendra Awhad have requested Maharashtra government to withdraw the case of Bhima Koregaon.
According to Awhad, the Bhima Koregaon case was false and the case should be withdrawn by the new government in Maharashtra.
He said “The previous government filed false crimes in Bhima Koregaon. Now this government of mine should withdraw those crimes. Yes, this is our government”.
What is Bhima Koregaon’s case?
The five activists were arrested in August 2018 in connection with the violence that broke out in the village near Pune on January 1 that year between Dalits and Marathas.
According to the police, the violence was triggered by a meeting called the Elgar Parishad, which was organized the day before in Pune to commemorate the battle of Bhima Koregaon in 1818 between the East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy.
The activists Gautam Navlakha, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj, and Varavara Rao were arrested in the case. The other five activists were accused – Shoma Sen, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson, and Sudhir Dhawale – were arrested in June 2018 as part of the same investigation.
