With a possibility of 10 candidates competing for nine seats, the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections look sure to happen.
Mumbai| To add to the distress of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Congress decides to field two nominees for the imminent Maharashtra Legislative Council polls.
With a possibility of 10 candidates competing for nine seats, the Maharashtra LC elections look certain to happen.
The elections would be bound to happen in case any of them does not withdraw their candidature, for which Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is among those in the fray.
The elections will become necessary if no candidate withdrew nomination by May 14.
Earlier, Congress had determined to field only one candidate for the May 21 election but state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat, on Saturday evening, tweeted that Rajkishor will be party’s second candidate. The party on Saturday announced two candidates — Rajesh Rathod and Rajkishor Modi — for the nine seats of Vidhan Parishad.

The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly forms electoral college for the polls, and a candidate needs 29 votes to win.
Congress has 44 MLAs.
CM Uddhav Thackeray is comfortably placed, however Congress’s stand has made the elections interesting. There was an opinion that these elections should be held unchallenged during COVID-19 crisis but that doesn’t look like a probability at this point.
