Second Coronavirus Case in Mumbai’s Dharavi in Less Than 24 Hours, BMC Worker Tests Positive

Maharashtra has so far reported 17 coronavirus related deaths, comprising patients from Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, and Buldhana.

Mumbai| Day after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sealed a building in Mumbai’s Dharavi after a 56-year-old coronavirus patient died, a second coronavirus case was reported on Thursday after Asia’s largest slum. This is the second coronavirus case in Dharavi in less than 24 hours.

“The 52-year-old man who tested positive had developed symptoms and was advised by BMC officials to get treatment. His condition is stable. His family members and 23 colleagues have been advised to quarantine,” a BMC official said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The BMC had sealed a building in Mumbai’s Dharavi after a 56-year-old man, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, died on Wednesday.

The second affected person is not a resident of Dharavi but of Worli’s Jijamata Nagar, another Coronavirus hotspot. The man was on duty in Dharavi until Monday when he developed symptoms. He was immediately relieved of duty and his tests came positive on Thursday. He has now been admitted to the Seven Hills hospital. The person’s 23 co-workers have been placed under home quarantine.

“We do not know if the person contracted the virus in Worli or Dharavi. Since the first Dharavi patient was tested positive a week after he developed symptoms, it is possible that the sweeper contracted it in Dharavi. His co-workers are under home quarantine,” said assistant municipal commissioner of G North ward Kiran Dighavkar.

As of now, the condition of the Dharavi man has been reported stable. Meanwhile, the family members and 23 other colleagues of the patient have been advised to quarantine, the BMC official said.

The Union health ministry said India has reported 1,965 cases so far. In the last 12 hours, as many as 131 fresh cases were reported. Fifty coronavirus patients have died so far. Out of the total cases, 1,764 are being treated, 150 people have recovered, and one person has left the country.
