Mumbai| As Markaz Nizamuddin in Delhi became the hotspot for the coronavirus cases, the curiosity of people grew about the Tablighi Jamaat and it’s functioning.
What Is Tablighi Jamaat?
It was set-up some 100 years ago by Deobandi Islamic Scholar Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Khandhalawi. Tablighi Jamaat is a religious reform movement that teaches Muslims to practice their religion as it was practiced during the lifetime of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
Markaz Nizamuddin in Delhi is Tablighi Jamaat’s international headquarters for the past 100 years. Tablighi Jamaat followers are mostly concentrated in South Asia, including some prominent faces such as India’s former President Zakir Husain. It is considered as one of the largest religious movement in the world.
Tablighi Jamaat is a complete non-political movement which promotes the basic tenets proposed by Prophet Mohammed such as Kalimah (declaration of faith), Salat (five times prayers), Ilm-o-Zikr (knowledge), Ikraam-e-Muslim (Respect of Muslim), Ikhlas-e-Niyyat (Sincerity of intention) and Tafrigh-i-Waqt (sparing time).
As the event organized by Tablighi Jamaat came under scrutiny after 7 deaths were linked to it due to coronavirus, the chief of the Jamaat Maulana Saad Kandhalvi was booked by police.
Delhi Police filed a case Against Saad for violating lockdown guidelines and organizing a large gathering in Delhi west area. Saad is untraceable since the Delhi Police served him a notice on 28th March. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi called the Tablighi Jammat’s act a “Talibani Crime”.
Who is Maulana Saad?
Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is head of the Tablighi Jamaat that organized the congregation in Delhi’s Markaz Nizamuddin which has now been linked to over 150 cases and 11 deaths due to Covid-19.
Saad was born on May 10, 1965. He is a grandson of Tablighi Jamaat founder Maulana Muhammad Ilyas. Markaz Nizamudding faction of Tablighi Jamaat is headed by Maulana Saad.
Before becoming the chief on November 16, 2015, Saad was a member of the Shura (central consultative council) of Tablighi Jamaat for 20 years.
The chief is selected by the Central Consultative Council, Shura, and other elders of the jamaat and is appointed for the life. However, Saad declared himself as chief as he didn’t agree with the new Shura consisting of 13 members including Abdul Wahhab.
Saad studied Maulviyat from madrasa Kashif-ul-Uloom situated in a part of Markaz. He has 3 sons and daughters and lives in Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti in West Delhi. He also owns houses in Zakir Nagar of Delhi and Kandhla of Uttar Pradesh.
