Dilip Ghosh alleged that TMC is opposing NRC in West Bengal in order to protect Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators who are its vote bank
Kolkata: On Monday West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said Hindus and Indian Muslims have nothing to worry about it as the exercise would be done only to weed out infiltrators. Ghosh’s comment comes in the backdrop of a panic gripping the people of West Bengal following the repeated announcement of BJP leaders that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would be implemented after the party comes to power in the state.
Hundreds of people are seen queueing at government and municipal offices across West Bengal to collect their birth certificates and other documents to be in readiness, should NRC be implemented in the state despite assurances by the TMC government that it would not be allowed in the state.
Dilip Ghosh said “The Opposition can say whatever they want, but we will implement the NRC in West Bengal. We will identify and drive away infiltrators. Amit Shahji will address in Bengal tomorrow and he will be here to say this. However, Hindus don’t have worry. Every Hindu will get citizenship,”.
“BJP has not brought in NRC in Assam, but it was implemented by the orders of the Supreme Court. In Bengal, even if people are dying of accidents, they are labeled as NRC-related deaths and the government are giving out Rs 2 lakh as compensation. Somewhere there is an attempt to mislead people and fan trouble. If there is panic, the chief minister, who is spreading fear, is responsible,” Ghosh added.
On the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Ghosh said, “The Bill will be introduced and passed in Parliament. Certainly, it will still take time. All Hindus will assure citizenship.”
Amit Shah is scheduled to speak to BJP workers at Netaji Indoor Stadium and will hold meetings with party leadership. He will inaugurate a community Durga Puja at Salt Lake. Sujan Chakraborty, CPM legislative party leader who also took part in the debate, said citizenship should not be granted on the basis of religion.
Sujan Chakraborty said “Asking Bengali to prove that they are Indian citizens is an insult to the people of India. People are being harassed by TMC. There are laws to identify foreigners and there are laws for Indian citizenship. Anybody should not divide the country and grant citizenship on the basis of religion. Interestingly, the chief minister Mamta supported this party (BJP) in 2003,”.
The BJP leader said Indian Muslims should be worried that infiltrators are eating into their jobs and livelihood.
Party’s senior leaders have said the bill would be reintroduced in the winter session of Parliament.

TMC has been against the updating of the NRC calling it an “anti-Bengali” move by BJP.
Currently, Assam is the only state in the country where the exercise was carried out, over 19 lakh people were omitted from the final list which was published on August 31. Some quarter raised that about 12 lakh of them are Hindus.
A large number of Hindu Bengalis from the final NRC list in BJP-ruled Assam has apparently created panic among the people of West Bengal and has allegedly 11 deaths so far.
