Delhi Minister Gopal Rai on Friday moved a resolution in the Assembly against the implementation of the process of NPR in Delhi.

New Delhi| The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government is latest among the non-BJP ruled states which have moved a resolution against the implementation of NPR implementation.

The resolution was tabled in the legislative assembly by senior party leader and state Cabinet Minister Gopal Rai.

With 62 out of 70 MLAs on their side, the Arvind Kejriwal government was poised to get the resolution passed in the House. Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK Govt Takes U-Turn on NPR, Puts Pre-Census Exercise on Hold Till Centre Clarifies Doubts.

Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Cabinet Minister Gopal Rai asserted that the ‘majority’ in the country will be the biggest sufferers if the National Population Register is implemented.

Rai said irrespective of whatever assurances the Home Minister has been giving, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will naturally follow National Population Register as the 2003 rules say so.

“The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government had amended the citizenship law as per which it was decided NPR data will be collated with it. This will be followed by verification. Suspicious data will be categorised as doubtful. Home Minister Shah said NPR will not have any segment on ‘D category’. Shah also said the government has been merely following the 2003 rules. And the rules also say that NRC data will be based on NPR.”

This comes a day after, Union Home Minister Amit Shah while replying to debate on the Delhi violence in Rajya Sabha, had said that time has come to remove apprehensions about CAA and NPR which will begin next month.

Shah said no documents would be sought from people during the NPR enumeration.

BJP ally AIADMK has also imposed a halt on the pre-Census exercise in the state. The E Palaniswami government said it would not resume the NPR enumeration process till the Centre clarifies on the new questions added in the NPR forms.

The three lawmakers of the AAP in Rajya Sabha and the sole MP in Lok Sabha had voted against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019. The CAA, according to critics, is first in the “chronology” of Centre’s citizenship drive which may adversely impact the Muslim community.

The Opposition has claimed that the CAA, along with the proposed nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC), could end up revoking the citizenship of Indian Muslims. The Government of India has, however, dispelled such speculations, calling them “baseless”.
