New Delhi| The Election Commission will announce the election dates for the Maharashtra and Haryana Legislative Assembly today. Maharashtra has 288 seats and currently, BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is ruling the state. The term of the assembly ends on 9th November. The Haryana Assembly has 90 seats. The state is ruled by the BJP government led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The term of the assembly ends on 2nd November. The last election in both states was announced on 20th September. Voting was held on 15th October. The results came out on 19th October. These elections will be the first test of the popularity of Modi government after the decision to abrogate Article 370 and triple talaq.
BJP got absolute majority in Haryana for the first time in 2014
Just before the 2014 assembly elections in Haryana, BJP broke alliances with Haryana Janhit Congress and contested all 90 seats. The party was successful in winning 47 seats. This was the first time in the history of the state when the BJP formed the government with an absolute majority.
The last time BJP-Shiv Sena contested separately in Maharashtra after 25 years
BJP and Shiv Sena went separate ways before the 2014 assembly elections in Maharashtra. The two parties contested separately after 25 years. BJP won 122 seats and Shiv Sena won 63 seats. At the same time, there was no agreement between the Congress-NCP on the seat-sharing. These two parties also contested separately.
NCP-Congress alliance; decision on seat-sharing in BJP-Shiv Sena remains
This time NCP chief Sharad Pawar has announced that NCP-Congress will contest 125-125 seats. Other allies will contest on 38 seats.
