Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat Resigns, Becomes Shortest Serving CM of The State

After his resignation, Tirath Singh Rawat said that he has taken this step because of the constitutional obligations.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya at around 11.15 pm on Friday night. He served as chief minister of the state only for 115 days. Prior to this, Bhagat Singh Koshyari had been CM for 123 days in 2002 from BJP.

After his resignation, Rawat said that he has taken this step because of the constitutional crisis. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity. At the same time, BJP state president Madan Kaushik said that the Chief Minister has resigned at the behest of the high command. The party is now looking at sitting MLAs to pick the next CM. A decision on this will be taken in the legislature party meeting to be held on Saturday.

Earlier, Tirath Singh Rawat held a press conference at 10.45 pm. In this, he counted the achievements of his tenure. After that he left the press conference. Journalists also questioned him about his resignation, but he left without answering.

Earlier it was said that Tirath Singh Rawat has submitted his resignation to BJP President JP Nadda. Now, the names of Dhan Singh Rawat and Satpal Maharaj are in discussion as the new Chief Minister of the state. BJP has made Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar as the central observer for the state. He will be present in the meeting on Saturday.

For the last one week, speculations were rife that Uttarakhand may see a change in the CM face once again. Constitutional compulsion was being cited as the reason behind Tirath Singh Rawat’s resignation. He was not yet a member of any house of the state. This was a big hurdle in the way of his continuing as Chief Minister. Rawat was summoned to Delhi by the BJP high command on Wednesday. There, Home Minister Amit Shah and JP Nadda met him.

After taking over as Chief Minister, Tirath Singh Rawat, who constantly made controversial statements had to resign within three and a half months.
