UP CM Yogi Adityanath kicked off a controversy with his remarks in the state assembly on the deaths during protests against the new Citizenship law.
New Delhi| UP CM Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday, while referring to the deaths in December during the anti-CAA protests in the state, said that if someone is coming with an intent to die, then how will the person remain alive.
During his address, the saffron-robed CM said, “Agar koi marne ke liye aa hi raha hai to woh zinda kahan se ho jaayega (If someone is coming with an intent to die, then how will the person remain alive?).” He was referring to the 22 deaths that happened during the protests against the contentious Citizenship Act which turned violent on several occasions.
The chief minister said, “”Upadravi, upadravi ki goli se marey hain,” (the trouble-makers died from bullet of another trouble-maker), Claiming that No one has died from police bullets and those who died have died of bullets from rioters.
The chief minister was responding to the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address in the state assembly.
Yogi Adityanath also targeted those who have been protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the state over the past weeks.

“Azaadi (freedom) slogans are being raised. What is ‘azaadi’? Do we have to work towards Jinnah’s dream or do we have to work towards Gandhi’s dream? The police should be praised for their work. After the December violence, there were no riots in the state,” he said.
He also claimed that his government in the state was not against any democratic protests but will not spare those indulging in violence and will reply them in their own language and said, “Those who try to undermine the law, we will reply to them in their language. I have always said we will support any democratic protest. But if someone hides behind democracy to vitiate the atmosphere, we will take action,” he added.
“Woh jis bhasha main samjhega , us bhasha main samjhayenge (we will reply to them in their language),” the saffron party MLA said.
The Chief Minister’s claims of no deaths in the state occurred due to police firing does not have a strong ground. In west Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, the local police confessed on record that they opened fire after an agitation against the citizenship law turned violent.
For rioting and destroying public properties, 883 people in the state have been, of which 561 have been granted bail.
Meanwhile, an old video of Yogi Adityanath had gone viral on social media in which he can be heard intimidating the protesters saying “Lower your banner or you will always remain unemployed. Remove him! Such people should have been removed.”
