Rane had started his political career with Shiv Sena, and was even made the Chief Minister for time being, but then left the party.

He reportedly left due to a feud with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections, several leaders from the Congress, as well as the NCP, joined either the BJP or the Shiv Sena.

This development may cause a strain in the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.
