India’s case counts are reducing now. New Covid-19 cases are coming down and the pressure on our health infrastructure is easing too. While this is definitely good news, one must not forget how the Second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic devastated the country. Many were left in the lurch for Oxygen, Hospital beds and ventilators and Medicines. And while India was struggling with the Second wave, mass gatherings like Kumbh Mela were organized. There were large crowds. Lakhs of people gathering on the Ghats of Ganga. They were happy and celebrating. They were taking holy dip in Ganga and Going about their rituals. There was hardly any social distancing, some were going maskless, leave alone the covid appropriate behaviour. Every 12 years Kumbh Mela is organized in the country. This time it was organized in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Despite the ferocious second wave of Coronavirus lakhs of people thronged the state to attend Kumbh. According to the reports, on Day 2 when the Shahi Snan took place as many as 28 Lakh people had reached Haridwar. At that time India was witnessing more than 1 lakh daily covid cases. In fact, the administration said they couldnt enforce covid restrictions as it would have created stampede like situation.
