“EC’s Decision Taken At Behest Of BJP”: Sanjay Raut On Campaigning Ban On Mamata Banerjee

In a tweet, Mr Raut said this was a “direct attack on democracy” and sovereignty of independent institutions of the country.

The Election Commission’s decision to bar West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from campaigning for 24 hours was taken at the behest of the BJP, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut alleged on Tuesday.

In a tweet, Mr Raut said this was a “direct attack on democracy” and sovereignty of independent institutions of the country.

While expressing solidarity with the West Bengal Chief Minister, the Sena’s chief spokesperson termed her as the “Bengal Tigress”.

The eight phase assembly polls are underway in the state of West Bengal, out of which four phases have been completed.

The Shiv Sena, which is not contesting the polls, has extended its support to Banerjee, who heads the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The Election Commission last evening banned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from campaigning in Bengal for 24 hours over her speeches that the poll body said violated the Model Code Of Conduct (MCC). The Trinamool supremo was accused of breaking the law with her comments on Muslim votes, as well as for allegedly urging voters to revolt against central security forces.

Reacting to it, Sanjay Raut in a tweet said, “ECI has imposed a ban on Mamta didi for 24 hours. This is clearly done at the behest of BJP, ruling party in India.”

“It is a direct attack on democracy and sovereignty of independent institutions of India. solidarity with Bengal Tigress, @MamataOfficial @derekobrienmp,” the Rajya Sabha MP further added.

After the ban was announced, Mamata Banerjee declared a sit-in protest against the ECā€™s decision.

ā€œTo protest against the undemocratic and unconstitutional decision of the Election Commission of India, I will sit on dharna tomorrow at Gandhi Murti, Kolkata from 12 noon,ā€ Ms Banerjee tweeted.
