Arvind Kejriwal said, “The bill says that the Delhi government will mean LG. If this is so then what will the elected government do?”
New Delhi| A bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which gives extensive powers to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The conflict between the Delhi government and the Centre regarding this bill may intensify in the coming days. According to the new bill, the government in Delhi will mean ‘LG’ and will have the power to approve any bill passed by the Legislative Assembly. Not only this, the bill states that the Delhi government will have to consult the Lieutenant Governor before taking any decision regarding the city. Apart from this, the Bill says that the Delhi government will not be able to make any law on its own. Let us tell you that the Supreme Court had said in its judgment on July 4, 2018, that the daily functioning of the government cannot be interfered with by the Lieutenant Governor.
The apex court had said that the Lieutenant Governor can act in aid of the government and play his role as an advisor to the Council of Ministers. However, he cannot interfere in the day-to-day functioning of the government. This bill has been targeted by the CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal on the Central Government. The CM says that through this the BJP wants to grab power from behind the scenes. He said that this bill is contrary to the decision given by the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court.
The Bill says-
1. For Delhi, “Govt” will mean LG
Then what will elected govt do?
2. All files will go to LG
This is against 4.7.18 Constitution Bench judgement which said that files will not be sent to LG, elected govt will take all decisions and send copy of decision to LG https://t.co/beY4SDOTYI

Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “The BJP, which was rejected by not getting even 8 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections and not a single seat in the MCD by-election, has now made preparations to grab power from behind the scenes. It has introduced the bill in the Lok Sabha today. This is against the decision of the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court. We oppose the BJP’s unconstitutional and undemocratic move.”
“If the decision is taken by LG, what will the elected government do?”
In another tweet, Arvind Kejriwal said, “The bill says that the government will mean LG. If this is so then what will the elected government do? All files will go to LG. This bill is against the decision of the Supreme Court, in which it said that all the decisions will be taken by the Delhi government and a copy will be sent to LG.”
“Promised full statehood before elections”
Apart from him, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has also attacked the Central Government and BJP in a tweet. He wrote,” BJP has brought a new law in Parliament today. According to this, the Lieutenant Governor will be the government in Delhi and the Chief Minister and Minister will have to send every file to LG. The BJP’s manifesto before the election says that Delhi will be made a full state. Winning the election, they say that LG will be the only government in Delhi.”
