senior journalist and editor in chief of English daily “Raising Kashmir” Shujat Bhukari was shot dead by militants outside his office in Srinagar on thursday evening. The state police chief SP Vaid said that it was around 7:15 pm when 3 motorcycle born militants came and opened fire at him and his guards. According to the police Bhukari was boarding his car to attend an Iftar party when he was attacked by militants. Also couple months back a journalist from Madhya Parddesh’ Bhind district Sandeep Sharma was crushed by a truck while he was riding a scooter. The same day in the Bhojpur district in the eastern Bihar state, journalist Navin Nishchal and his colleague Vijay Singh were the victims of a deadly hit-and-run. The question is why are journalists getting killed for doing their jobs? And India just ranks 138th out of 180 countries on the 2018 World Press Freedom Index. Perhaps the journalists of our country are the most forsaken lot when it comes to safety and security of being a professional of any profession.
