NCP leader Tariq Anwar quits party over Sharad Pawar’s support to PM Modi on Rafale deal

New Delhi | Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Lok Sabha MP from Bihar’s Katihar Tariq Anwar on Friday resigned the party.

Protesting against the NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s recent statement supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Indo-France Rafale scam, Anwar quits the party along with resigning from his Lok Sabha post. Speaking about his resignation Anwar said,” He cannot betray the common perception over irregularities in the deal.” He further added, ā€œI resigned after being hurt by Pawar Sahebā€™s comments. There must be a thorough probe on the corruption in Rafale deal.ā€

Earlier on Thursday NCP chief Sharad Pawar while responding to the questions of Rafale deal on a Marathi Channel said, “People have doubts about Modiā€™s intentions in the Rafale deal.” Rejecting the opposition demand to share technical details relating to the fighter jets, Pawar said, “this made no senseā€. He further added that there would be no harm for the government to disclose prices of the aircraft.

Receiving the support from Sharad Pawar over the Rafale deal, various BJP leaders praised the statement of the NCP chief. BJP president Amit Shah wrote on Twitter, “I thank Shri Sharad Pawar ji, a former Defence Minister and veteran MP, for placing national interests above party politics and speaking the truth. Dear Rahul Gandhi, you would be wiser by believing your own ally and a leader of Pawar Sahebā€™s stature.”
