Kerala Floods: Rahul Gandhi visits flood affected area, promise ‘Fisherman Ministry’

Thiruvananthapuram | Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited the flood-affected region of Kerala.

Gandhi visited the relief camps in the districts of Chengannur, Alapuzha, Ernakulam and met the people and rescue workers living in the relief camps. Felicitating the fishermen who have been lauded for their relief work in the flood-affected Alapuzha region of Kerala, Gandhi said,”3000 fishermen saved 70,000 people. This is not a small thing, it is a huge deal. I want to say thank you to you”.

Promising the formation of ‘Ministry of Fishermen’ the Congress president said, “I don’t like to make fake promises. You can take this as a commitment… If farmers have built this country, fishermen also have helped to build this country.” Rahul Gandhi also visited the relief camp at the Christian College and an Engineering college in Chengannur.

Earlier on Monday, announcing his visit to Kerala to meet the flood-affected people, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I will be in Kerala tomorrow & the day after, visiting flood-hit areas & relief camps in the state. I will also meet with fishermen, volunteers & others who have been working tirelessly & selflessly to help those in need.”

In a devastating flood in Kerala in 13 of the 14 districts in the state more than 400 people have died since June 2018 while 4 lakh people are forced to stay in relief camps. The Central government had announced a package of 500 crores for the relief and rescue work in Kerala.
