BJP MP Satish Gautam has written to the Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor demanding that the portrait to be taken down.
Aligarh Muslim University made headlines after a picture of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, was found displayed on its premises. The incident has sparked a controversy. BJP MP Satish Gautam has written to the Vice-Chancellor demanding that the portrait to be taken down.
“It is fine if Jinnah has been revered in Pakistan after Partition. But his portrait should not be put up here in India. The university should instead celebrate the contributions of Raja Mahendra Pratap and Sir Syyed Ahmed who played a crucial role in establishing the university,” said Aligarh MP Gautam, who also plans to speak to V-C Tariq Mansoor about it.
Meanwhile, the president of the university’s students’ union retorted that the picture was put up years ago before the partition had taken place. He said that a formal decision will be taken on the matter by the institution if a formal order is given by the government. Aligarh Muslim University administration also maintains that AMU Students’ Union is an autonomous body.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah served as the leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan’s independence on 14 August 1947. Jinnah was Pakistan’s first Governor-General until his death in 1948.
