Freedom March 2017: MLA Jignesh Mevani, NCP’s Reshma Patel Sentenced To Three Month Jail Term

Bhavnagar: A Gujarat court has sentenced MLA Jignesh Mevani and NCP leader Reshma Patel for three month imprisonment in a case related to taking out a protest march in 2017 without permission. 

Apart from them, Subodh Parmar was also convicted for taking out Freedom March in 2017. The march was taken out on the first anniversary of Una flogging incident without permission.

Jignesh Mevani, Reshma Patel, Subodh Parmar and 11 other accused have been given three months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1000.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate JA Parmar held them guilty of being part of an unlawful assembly, under section 143 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Mehsana ‘A’ division police had lodged an FIR under IPC section 143 against Jignesh Mevani and others for taking out the ‘Azadi march’ from Mehsana to Dhanera in Banaskantha district without permission in July 2017.

Reshma Patel, then a supporter of reservation for the Patidar community, was not a member of any political party when she had participate in the march. 

Last week Jignesh Mevani was released on bail from Assam. He was released on bail from days after he was picked up by the Assam police from Palanpur in Gujarat over his purported tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After being released on bail in this case, he was rearrested for allegedly assaulting a policewoman who was part of the police party which accompanied him to Kokrajhar in Assam.

On Saturday, Gujarat MLA was granted bail in the second case.
