“Take It All India. You Deserve It.”: How International Media Reported India’s Victory In Brisbane

Leading newspapers in the world, including the prestigious New York Times, took notice of India’s historic victory in Australia.

In its triumph against host Australia in the 4-match Test series, India has garnered praises from across the world for the grit and resilience they showed. The tough battles that India fought on and off the field, be it injuries to key players or racial abuse by the crowd members, spoke lengths and volumes of the character the team showed in foreign conditions.

In Australia, where no Asian country has yet won a test series, the Indian team won its second consecutive assignment in the longest format of the game. Leading newspapers in the world, including the prestigious New York Times, took notice of India’s historic victory in Australia.

India Celebrates as Cricket Team Humbles Australia on Its Own Turf: NY Times

The NYT article spoke about the challenges the Indian team faced in the 4-match Test series in a lead up to defeating Aussies 2-1.

“The win in Australia is being called one of the greatest in India’s cricketing history. In the celebrations, it was clear that to many Indians the sport has also become an important symbol for their nation’s wider ambition of rubbing shoulders with the world’s powers,” the NYT article said.

India’s bloody-mindedness fired them to historic win in Australia: Guardian UK

“Injury after injury meant players vanished like chips at the pub. There was no continuity. Only the batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane played all four Tests. The decider relied on net bowlers who had been kept on the tour after some white-ball matches in November. All of this came after having been humiliated in the first Test at Adelaide by being bowled out for 36 to lose from a strong position,” the Guardian narrated India’s situation throughout the series.

“For the third time in these recent Australia contests, after 2001 and 2017, India lost the first match but fought back to win the series. This alone is a rare thing in Test cricket. But to have done it in these circumstances, under these constraints, is what sets this result apart. It exists in a tradition, but the effort of these players also sits squarely on its own,” it concluded.

News Corp’s veteran cricket writer Robert Craddock wrote: “It was the day when The Irrepressibles became The Immortals.”

“The day when Fortress Gabba was stormed by a group of cavalier raiders who kicked down the draw bridge, stole the crown jewels and raced off into the late afternoon sunshine towards hysterical fans who will cherish the memory forever.”

“Take it all India. You deserve it.”

Gideon Haigh wrote in The Australian newspaper: “The outcome was a revelation: Australia pressed for victory because they had to, India because they wanted to, and the result was a fitting climax to one of the most extraordinary series of all time.”
