New Delhi: Tata Group has announced that the post of Chairman of Air India will be held by Natarajan Chandrasekaran. His appointment has been confirmed by the board on Monday.
Previously the post as the chief executive of Air India was offered to Turkey’s Ilker Ayci, but his appointment was opposed by opposition.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was against the appointment of Ayci as the CEO citing his previous political links. RSS, the ideological mentor of BJP, called upon the government and urged to block his appointment. Former Chairman of Turkish Airlines, Ilker Ayci, in the year 1994 was an advisor of Tayyip Erdogan when the Turkish President was Mayor of Istanbul.
Turkey’s Ilker Ayci declined to take up charge as chief executive of Air India.
Chandrasekaran is the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company and promoter of more than 100 Tata operating companies. In October 2016 he had joined the Board of Tata Sons, and in January 2017 was appointed as chairman.
He chairs the Board of several group operating companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
Under his leadership TCS has generated consolidated revenues of US$16.5 billion in 2015-16. With over 556,000 consultants, TCS has become the largest private sector employer in India.
His appointment as chairman follows 30 years of business career at TCS which he had joined from University. He rose through the ranks at TCS to become CEO and Managing Director of the leading global IT solution and consulting firm.
In 2022, Chandrasekaran has been honoured with Padma Bhushan by Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for excellence in Trade and Industry.
