โ€œI, Rahul and Priyanka Ready To Resignโ€; What Sonia Gandhi Said During CWC Meet On Poll Disaster

Chairing a crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet on Sunday, the party chief Sonia Gandhi said that she and party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are ready to tender their resignations if the party wants.

However, the GOPโ€™s top decision making body unanimously rejected her offer.

The Congress party suffered massive drubbing in recently concluded assmebly polls, in which it could not prevent BJP from retaining power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, and lost to Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.

After nearly four-hour-long meeting, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: โ€œCongress interim president Sonia Gandhi said that she along with her family members Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are ready to sacrifice for the party, but we all rejected this.โ€

News agency PTI, citing sources, reported that the Congress president listened to all leaders in the crucial meeting, and is willing to make required changes to strengthen the party.

The CWC โ€œunanimously reaffirmedโ€ its faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and requested the Congress president to lead from the front and address the organisational weaknesses.

The recent Assembly election results of five states are a โ€œcause of serious concernโ€ for the party, it noted.

The CWC, in a statement, said: โ€œThe party accepts that due to shortcomings in our strategy, we could not effectively expose the misrule of BJP state governments in four states and overcome the anti-incumbency in the state of Punjab in the short time after effecting a change of leadership.โ€

Congress party represents the hopes of millions of Indians against political โ€œauthoritarianismโ€ prevailing in the country today and the party is โ€œfully consciousโ€ of its immense responsibility, it added.
