Lucknow: An action has been ordered against the senior administration official of Varanasi amid the row over voting machines in Uttar Pradesh yesterday, said NDTV sources. Their sources have also said that an action has been ordered over the alleged violation of rules in the transportation of training EVMs, by the Election Commission. The Chief Election Officer of Uttar Pradesh will be taking action against the official, Varanasi Additional District Magistrate, after the city commissioner admitted to lapses, said sources of NDTV.
According to their sources, NK Singh will be placed under suspension.
Yesterday a truck carrying machines was intercepted by party workers in Varanasi. After this, the Samajwadi Party had accused the government of “theft”. Today, taking to Twitter, the party has tweeted a video of the official conceding there were “lapses”.
Speaking to reporters last evening, Varanasi’s Commissioner Deepak Agarwal said: “If you talk about the protocol for the movement of EVMs, there was a lapse in the protocol, I accept that. But I can guarantee you, it is impossible to take away machines used in voting”.
He maintained that the machines in question were meant for training purposes.
