90% Studying Medicine Abroad Cannot Clear Qualifiers In India: Union Minister

“90 per cent of Indians who study medicine abroad fail to clear qualifying exams in India,” Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has claimed in a controversial remark amid efforts to evacuate Indian students stuck in war-torn Ukraine. Mr Joshi, however, stressed to TOI that this is “not the right time to debate why students are moving out to study medicine”.

Students who pursue medical degrees abroad have to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), to practice medicine in India.

The comments by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister came at a time when thousands of Indian students remain stranded in Ukraine, the country facing onslaught of massive Russian army.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine asked the Indian Nationals to urgently leave the capital Kyiv. “Advisory to Indians in Kyiv- All Indian nationals including students are advised to leave Kyiv urgently today. Preferably by available trains or through any other means available (sic),” a statement from the embassy read.

Thousands of Indian students stranded in the war-struck country are making desperate appeals for evacuation. A massive mission of bringing back the stranded Indians from war-torn Ukraine has been undertaken by the Indian government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the Indian Air Force to assist in the evacuation process of Indians from war-torn Ukraine.
