The impeachment motion accuses Donald Trump of inciting supporters to insurrection. It said that Trump encouraged his supporters to lay siege to the Capitol Building.
Washington| The Democratic Party-dominated House of Representatives in the US late on Wednesday approved the impeachment motion of outgoing US President Donald Trump. During the vote on Trump’s impeachment motion in the House of Representatives, 232 votes were cast in favour of impeachment motion (Democrats 222 + Republicans 10) and 197 in the opposition. With the vote, Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice. This impeachment motion was brought against Trump in the Capitol violence case.
Accused of “incitement of insurrection”
The impeachment motion against Donald Trump was drafted by MPs Jamie Ruskin, David Cicilline and Ted Liu. It was co-sponsored by 211 members of the House of Representatives. The motion accuses the outgoing president of inciting supporters to insurrection. It said that Trump encouraged his supporters to lay siege to the Capitol Building (Parliament complex) when the counting of votes of the Electoral College was going on and the process was disrupted as people attacked. Five people, including a police officer, were killed in the incident.
The proposal will now be presented in the Senate
After the impeachment motion against Donald Trump was approved in the House of Representatives, all eyes are now on the Senate. If the proposal is passed here too, Donald Trump will have to leave the office before the scheduled time. But Republican leaders in the Senate have a slim majority of 51 against 50. The votes of two-thirds of the members are required to pass the impeachment motion in the Senate.
On the other hand, after being banned by various social media platforms after the attack on Capitol Hill, outgoing US President Donald Trump said that freedom of expression in the country was never in such a danger before. “I am not at all threatened by the 25th amendment, but it may pose a further threat to newly elected President Joe Biden and his administration,” he said.
