New Delhi | The Congress party today released its 9th list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha election fielding P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram from Shivganga seat of Tamil Nadu. The party has issued a list of 10 candidates from 5 states i.e Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Congress has given ticket to former NCP leader Tariq Anwar to contest from Bihar’s Katihar along with Mohammed Javed from Kisanganj, Uday Singh from Purania. Tariq Anwar had quit the Nationalist Congress Party and submitted his resignation from his Member of Parliament post after NCP chief Sharad Pawar praised PM Narendra Modi on the Rafale isssue.
From Jammu and Kashmir, Congress has given a ticket to Haji Farooq Mir to contest from Baramulla seat. The Congress has formed an alliance with National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, however, both the parties will file its candidates from Anantnag and Baramulla constituency in a friendly contest. From Karnataka, in the 9th list B.K Hariprasad will contest from Bangalore South. Hariprasad is currently a Rajya Sabha MP representing Karnataka. Last year he also contested from the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman however lost to JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh.
In Maharashtra, the Congress party has given ticket to 4 candidates, Hidayat Patel from Akola, Kishor Gajbhiye from Ramtek (SC). In the Chandrapur constituency, the Congress party has replaced its candidate. Suresh Dhanorkar will now contest in place from Vinayak Bangade from Chandrapur. Also in a surprise move from Maharashtra, Congress has given ticket to Subhash Wankhede in place of sitting MP Rajiv Satav from Hingoli constituency. Satav was among the two Congress MP who won the 2014 Lok Sabha election along with Maharashtra Congress President Ashok Chavan who had won from Nanded constituency.
The most surprise inclusion in the list is the candidature of Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram from Shivganga seat. Karti had earlier lost on the same Shivganga seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha election against AIADMK’s P. R. Senthilnathan. His father P Chidambaram was 7 time elected from the same Shivganga Lok Sabha constituency.
A Delhi court has extended the interim protection to Karti till March 25 from his arrest as well as that of former Union minister P Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis scam cases filed by the CBI and the ED.
