New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Thursday raising concern over the rescue work of the trapped miners in the East Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, told the state government that it is not satisfied with the entire rescue operation.

A two-judge Supreme Court bench, hearing a mentioning by a lawyer in the matter asked the state government about the steps taken to rescue 15 miners, who are trapped in an illegal flooded coal mine in East Jaintia Hills since December 13 last year. The State government in its reply informed that 72 NDRF personnel, 14 Navy personnel and Coal India personnel are working since Dec 14. To which the apex court bench questioned “Then, why are they not successful?”

On December 13, around 20 miners entered the 370-foot mine at about 8 am. After reaching the bottom of the pit, the miners entered the horizontal manholes, often termed as ‘rat-holes’. According to villagers, one of the diggers could have accidentally punctured the walls of the cave and the river water gushed in immediately, trapping the miners inside. Luckily only five persons managed to climb out of the mine. Operations to rescue the trapped miners entered its 21st day on January 3rd as over 100 personnel from the NDRF and the SDRF are at the site, alongside the state police.

New Delhi | Kerala Chief Minister P Vijayan on Thursday alleged the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for the violence in Kerala after 2 women aged below 50 years entered the Sabarimala Temple on Tuesday.

Responding to the violence CM Vijayan said,” 7 police vehicles, 79 KSRTC buses destroyed and 39 police personnel attacked, till now”.” Most of the persons attacked were women. Women media persons were also attacked,” he added.

Alleging the RSS, the political ideologue of BJP for creating violence in the State on the name of Sabarimala, Vijayan said,” Sangh Parivar is trying to make Sabarimala into a clash zone.” It’s the government’s responsibility to give protection to women. The government has fulfilled this constitutional responsibility,” he added.

A dawn-to-dusk 12-hour hartal called by Hindu outfits began on Thursday morning in protest against the entry of two women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala temple of Lord Ayyappa. The hartal, which began at 6 am, has been called by Sabarimala Karma Samithi, an umbrella organisation of various pro-Hindutva groups, spearheading protests against the Supreme Court’s September 28 verdict, and Antarrashtriya Hindu Parishad (AHP). The BJP is supporting the shutdown while the Congress-led UDF is observing a “black day” on Thursday.

Two women, Kanakadurga (44) and Bindu (42), created history be stepping into the hallowed precincts guarded by police three months after the Supreme Court’s historic judgement lifting the ban on entry of girls and women between 10 and 50 years of age into the shrine of Lord Ayyappa, its “eternally celibate” deity.
