New Delhi| Prime minister Narendra Modi has finally accepted the invitation extended by the Maldives to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on November 17.

PM Modi will be travelling to Singapore to attend the 13th East Asia Summit. He is also expected to hold meetings on November 14 and 15 before attending the swearing-in ceremony, confirmed MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

In September this year, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s candidate, defeated former president Abdulla Yameen to become the head of the island country. He had extended an invitation to PM Modi to attend his swearing-in ceremony. He was also invited by Modi to visit India.

The Maldives is the only SAARC nation PM Modi has not yet visited. Election of Ibrahim Solih had ushered hopes of strengthening of ties between India and Maldives.
