Calcutta High Court rejects petition challenging distribution of government funds for Durga Pooja

Kolkata | The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected a petition filed against the Mamta Banerjee led TMC government providing grants to 28,000 Durga puja committees.

The High Court bench termed the case not maintainable and refused to intervene in the matter at the current stage of the process. Earlier the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on September 10 announced a package of Rs 28 crore across the state for the 28,000 Durga puja committees. The funds will be distributed among 3,000 puja committees in Kolkata and an additional 25,000 committees in other parts of Bengal.

After the CM’s announcement was challenged, the Calcutta High Court division bench asked the government the grounds on which it was using the exchequer money for Durga Puja celebrations and if there were any guidelines for the same. The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since taking charge of the state government in 2011 has granted around 600 crores for various clubs organising the Durga Puja festival
