Supreme Court directs Dilbag Singh to continue as J&K police chief until new appointment

New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Dilbag Singh to continue as the acting Director General of Police (DGP).

Dilbag Singh will continue as the Jammu and Kashmir police chief until the Union Public Service Commision (UPSC) submits its recommendation for the next chief. The top court has also ordered the UPSC to recommend names of the senior police officer to replace Singh within six weeks.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on September 7 had announced the transfer of Director General of Police SP Vaid as State’s Transport Commissioner while Director General of Prison, Dilbag Singh was given the additional charge of the post until the appointment of a new chief.

The Supreme Court three bench headed by Chief Justice Deepak Misra was hearing the petition filed by Senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan the appointment of Dilbag Singh which stated that Singh’s appointment was a gross contempt of court as the procedure laid down for the change of DGP in the state has been allegedly deliberately violated by the state administration.

Jammu and Kashmir is under the President’s rule after the BJP withdrew its support from the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government in June this year. After the completion of Amarnath Yatra, Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the new governor in place of NN Vohra.
