MEA spokesperson confirms India-Pakistan foreign ministers’ meeting in New York

New Delhi | External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will be meeting Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister in the last week of September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, confirmed MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

Addressing a Press Conference, the External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, “I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time.” However, he clarified that “this is just a meeting, not talks or resumption of dialogue.”

He further added that “We have not finalised the agenda for the meeting,” Raveesh Kumar said. Earlier Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking his Indian counterpart to resume dialogue that has been suspended since 2015.

Khan in its letter stated that “We…owe it to our people, especially the future generations, to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues, including the Jammu & Kashmir dispute, to bridge differences and achieve a mutually beneficial outcome. Siachin [sic] and Sir Creek also need close attention to move towards resolution.”

Talks between India and Pakistan came to standstill after the terrorist attack on the army base near Uri town of Jammu and Kashmir on 18 September 2016.
