Delhi Archbishop claims ‘secular fabric under threat’

In a letter written to all parish priests in the capital, the Archbishop of Delhi, Anil Couto, asked for a prayer campaign to be launched and also appealed for fasting on Fridays ahead of the 2019 general elections.

In the circular addressed to all parish priests and religious institutions in the Archdiocese of Delhi, Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Couto said, “We are witnessing a turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution and the secular fabric of our nation,” while urging the Christians to pray for the political leaders of the country as the general elections are nearing.

On the reference to “turbulent political atmosphere,” the Archbishop’s office clarified that the current situation was indeed a cause for concern but “in no way were they referring to any particular regime or party.” “The use of “new government” in the letter is being misinterpreted. After every election, a new government is formed whether it is of a new party or a party that may return to office again,” Father Rodrigues, the Archbishop’s secretary said.

When contacted, Father Robinson Rodrigues told a source that such prayer campaigns took place before every general election, but the exercise was being politicised this time.

‘Betrayed People Of Bihar’: BJP Slams Nitish Kumar As He Joins Mahagathbandhan

BJP slams Nitish Kumar
The tension between the two parties hit breakpoint over Nitish Kumar’s concerns that Union Minister Amit Shah is trying to split the JDU.

Mumbai: The Bihar unit of the BJP accused Nitish Kumar of betraying the state’s citizens when he abruptly changed sides. Sanjay Jaiswal, the head of the Bihar BJP, declared during a press conference in Patna that the people of Bihar will “never forgive” Nitish Kumar.

“We fought the 2020 polls together under NDA, the mandate was for JD(U) and BJP. We won more seats, despite that Nitish Kumar was made the Chief Minister. Whatever happened today is a betrayal of Bihar’s people & the BJP,” Mr Jaiswal said.

At 4 o’clock, Mr. Kumar will meet with the Governor after breaking off his partnership with the BJP and accusing them of trying to undermine his party. Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal and other party officials who support him will accompany him, according to reports.

Giriraj Singh, a BJP Union minister and the party’s prominent figure in Bihar, earlier today told NDTV that his party adhered to coalition dharma and that Nitish Kumar made the decision to dissolve the party.

“We have always followed the dharma of coalition and maintained the dignity of the alliance, when we had 63 MLAs, he had 36, we made him the Chief Minister. Today Nitish seems to be shopping,” Mr. Singh said.

Bihar’s top BJP officials are travelling to Patna to talk about the ramifications of the split. Sushil Kumar Modi and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will be among them. Before deciding to leave the BJP for good a second time, Nitish Kumar met with his MLAs. Late this afternoon, he met with the Governor to submit his resignation. He told his MLAs of his resignation and announced it to the media after seeing the Governor. “I’ve resigned, and I’ve informed my MLAs about this,” he said to the media after seeing the Governor.

Concerns raised by Nitish Kumar that Union Minister Amit Shah is obstinately trying to separate the Janata Dal led to a breaking point in the tension between the two parties.
