The city’s plethora of Victorian and Art Deco buildings in the Fort and Marine Drive heritage sites is just a step away from being declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
On Thursday, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) technical adviser, the Paris-based International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos), recommended this prestigious tag for the south Mumbai enclave. A proposal is generally accepted by Unesco once Icomos gives its stamp of approval to it.
“This is special because it acknowledges India’s modern architecture. Most of the earlier nominations from the country were for ancient and medieval sites,” conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, who prepared the heritage dossier for Mumbai, said.
The Victorian and Art Deco ensemble of Mumbai will become the city’s third World Heritage Site with the other two being CST and the Elephanta Caves.
A world heritage site tag will catapult the precinct to international fame, attracting more tourists. The site will also receive more funding from global bodies for conservation and upkeep.
