Two senior judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice M B Lokur, have urged the Chief Justice of India to hold a full court in order to discuss the institutional issues plaguing the higher judiciary.
A full court meeting of the apex court is usually convened by the CJI in situations when a matter of public importance relating to the judiciary comes up. Such meetings involve all the judges. Sources said that Justices Gogoi and Lokur signed the joint two-line letter on April 22 in which they spoke about holding of a “full court”.
This, however, is not the first time that top Supreme Court judges have written to CJI Misra. Over the past few months, the chief justice has received a series of such letters. Earlier this month, Justice Kurian Joseph wrote to the CJI and urged the apex court to act against the delay in approving two appointments to the court despite the collegium’s recommendation. Also, in his letter to all the judges on March 21, Justice Chelameswar had urged the CJI to convene a full court to take up the issue of alleged executive interference in the judiciary.
The letter was written a day before Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu rejected the opposition impeachment notice against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
