UN demands justice for the innocent victims of Kathua and Unnao rape cases through strict execution of the accused.
After the barbaric scenario of rape and murder in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir came to light along with the rape of a 17-year-old in Unnao, UN has stepped forward and publicly declared this crime as being “horrific”.
“To rape and kill children is to defy and violate fundamental aspects of our shared humanity. No rape and no murder is justifiable,” UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said on Tuesday after she was asked about the UN chief’s response to the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condemned the incident in Kathua and the rape of a teenager in Unnao in July 2017, in which an Uttar Pradesh legislator is accused. “As a country, as a society, we all are ashamed of it,” Modi said in New Delhi. “I want to assure the country that no culprit will be spared, complete justice will be done. Our daughters will definitely get justice” he added.
UN Resident Coordinator in India Yuri Afanasiev had strongly criticized these heinous crimes saying an “unequivocal commitment” by leadership at “the highest level” to address sexual violence and to ensure accountability for such crimes is essential for justice to be delivered.
“We are deeply concerned about the prevalence of gender-based violence, including sexual violence against women and girls, which we are witnessing in India,” Afanasiev had said in an April 13 statement issued in New Delhi.
