Amid protests in several states over the recently announced Agnipath scheme, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today urged the central government not to limit the service period for the recruits in the armed forces to just four years.
In a series of tweets, Arvind Kejriwal extended his support to the Army aspirants who are protesting against the scheme.
Mr. Kejriwal is now among the growing list of politicians who have condemned the scheme, under which soldiers will be recruited into the armed forces as ‘Agniveers’ on a contractual basis for four years, followed by compulsory retirement for most without gratuity and pension benefits.
Earlier, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav this morning called the move “negligent” and potentially “fatal” for the country’s future. “The security of the country is not a short-term or informal issue, it requires a very serious and long-term policy. The irresponsible attitude that is being adopted regarding military recruitment will prove to be fatal for protecting the future of the country and the youth of the country. There should be no fire on the path from ‘Agneepath’. “he tweeted.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is currently being┬а probed by the Enforcement Directorate regarding a money laundering case tweeted “No rank, no pension no direct recruitment since 2 years no stable future after 4 years no respect for the army Listen to the voice of the unemployed youth of the country, don’t take ‘fire test’ of their restraint by driving them on ‘Agneepath’, Prime Minister.”The tweet read.
Defense aspirants in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, and several other states staged protests today against the Agnipath scheme to recruit people into armed services.
