Mumbai Cops On Lookout In Delhi For Untraceable Nupur Sharma

Nupur Sharma

The Mumbai Police team has been searching for Nupur Sharma in Delhi for the past five days.

New Delhi: Suspended Nupur Sharma, a BJP spokesperson, has gone missing days after police in several states filed charges against her for comments she made on a news channel about Prophet Muhammad.

On May 28, the Mumbai Police filed a case against Ms Sharma, a Delhi resident, after her comment sparked outrage in India and the Gulf countries, based on a complaint filed by Irfan Sheikh, the joint secretary of a Muslim organization called Raza Academy.

According to sources, a Mumbai Police team in Delhi to question Ms Sharma could not locate her. They claimed she had become untraceable.

According to Maharashtra Home Ministry sources, the Mumbai Police have enough evidence to arrest the former BJP spokesperson.

The Mumbai Police team has been searching for Ms Sharma in the national capital for the past five days.

Ms Sharma is also the subject of an FIR filed by the Kolkata Police based on a complaint filed by Trinamool Congress minority cell general secretary Abul Sohail. The Kolkata Police Department summoned her to give her statement on June 20. The Delhi Police have filed another FIR against Ms Sharma regarding her remark about Prophet Mohammad.

The BJP suspended Ms Sharma after her comments about Prophet Muhammad on television triggered rage and official protests from at least 15 countries, including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Several Gulf countries summoned Indian envoys and condemned what they called โ€œanti-Islamic statementsโ€ by BJP spokespersons.

Ms Sharma retracted her statement โ€œunconditionally,โ€ claiming she was reacting to โ€œconstant insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev (Lord Shiva).โ€

To appease the Gulf nations, the government told them that Ms Sharmaโ€™s comments reflected the views of โ€œfringe elements,โ€ even though she was the BJPโ€™s spokesperson.

Mother Teresaโ€™s Foreign Funds Licence Has Been Revoked.

Aleesha Sam

New Delhi: The FCRA license for Mother Teresaโ€™s Missionary Charity was restored on Saturday, according to an entry in the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act website, two weeks after the Home Ministry cited โ€œadverse inputsโ€ to refuse a renewal request by the Kolkata-based organisation.

The loss of the license โ€“ needed to receive and use charitable contributions from abroad โ€“ left the group, which operates orphanages and shelters for the poor, sick, and destitute in India, unable to access foreign funds stored in over 250 accounts.

Although, no statement has been been made by the government so far.

Trinamool MP Derek Oโ€™Brien, who was one of several opposition leaders to slam the government over its cancelling of the FCRA licence, this morning tweeted โ€œthe power of love is stronger than the power of 56 inchโ€ โ€“ an indirect swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

โ€œThe FCRA registration for Mother Teresaโ€™s Missionaries of Charity is back. The โ€˜adverse inputsโ€™ harassed so many and then disappeared in two weeks. The POWER OF LOVE is stronger than the power of 56 inch,โ€ the Rajya Sabha member wrote.

The Missionaries of Charityโ€™s FCRA licence was revoked on Christmas Day in a move that was widely condemned by many, including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Home Ministry said it had not received a request to review its decision.

The Ministry did not give details but this was after a police complaint in Gujarat against the Director of a childrenโ€™s home, run by the Missionaries of Charity, for allegedly attempting to convert inmates.

The charity confirmed the rejection of their renewal request and said, โ€œwe have asked our centres not to operate any of the FC (foreign contributions) accounts until the matter is resolvedโ€.

Work at the organisation had continued despite the slashing of available funds.

Last week an official from the Missionaries of Charity told news agency PTI: โ€œIn India, we have been sustaining all these years with the love and support of people in this country. So we will continue to serve the poor, destitute, ailing, aged with the same gusto in the same way.โ€

The organisation received financial help, however, from the Odisha government. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaikโ€™s office said โ‚น 78.76 lakh would be given to 13 of the charityโ€™s institutions in the state.

Refusing FCRA clearance has been listed by critics of the government as its way of suppressing organisations whose work or officials are not considered supportive enough of the government.

Also last week it emerged that more than 12,000 NGOs and charitable organisations in India, including the Missionaries of Charity, had lost their FCRA licences after it expired.
