Bhagat Singh Koshyari

“If Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Thane, no money would be left here,” Bhagat Singh Koshyari said.

Mumbai| Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has once again made a controversial statement. A video of this incident is going viral on social media. Koshyari said that Mumbai will cease to be a financial capital if Gujaratis and Marwaris (Rajasthanis) are removed from the city. He said that no money would be left here if these two communities are not part of the city.

He was addressing an event at the inauguration of a chowk in Andheri after the late Shantidevi Champalalji Kothari on Friday. Praising the Gujarati and Marwari community, Koshyari said that wherever they go, they contribute to the development of that region by building schools, hospitals etc.

“If Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Thane, no money would be left here. Mumbai would not be able to remain the financial capital of the country,” Bhagat Singh Koshyari said.

His statement, however, has created a furore in the state.

Sanjay Raut Reacts

Shivsena MP Sanjay Raut reacting to Koshyari’s statement said this is a gross insult of Marathi Manoos. He said that in short, the governor has called Marathi Manoos a beggar. “Even Morarji Desai did not insult 105 Marathi martyrs like this.. Chief Minister Shinde…are you listening? That your Maharashtra is different.. If you have a shred of self-respect, first ask for the governor’s resignation. How much should one lean in front of Delhi?” Sanjay Raut asked.

Shivsena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi too said┬аthat this is an insult to the hard work of the people of Maharashtra and Marathi Manoos who have toiled day in and day out to make the state the leading state of the country. “The Governor should apologise immediately, failing which, we will demand to replace him,” she tweeted.

Congress, NCP Hit Back

NCP MP Supriya Sule said that Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s statement is belittling Marathi Manoos. “As a Marathi Manoos, I condemn his statement. 105 martyrs shed their blood in the struggle of United Maharashtra for Mumbai. This city has stood because of the thunder fist of millions of Marathi people,” she tweeted.

She added, “This statement of the Governor is insulting to those martyrs. This city was built by labourers. All of them have the first right to Mumbai. This is ‘Aamchi Mumbai’ for all who are born on this soil and love Mumbai.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh too tweeted the video of Koshyari and said that even though the governor’s name is “Koshyari” there is no “Hoshiyari” (Smartness) in what he says or does. “He is sitting on the chair only because we faithfully obey the command of ‘we two’,” Jairam Ramesh said.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Nitesh Rane has tried to defend the Governor. He said that the governor did not insult anyone but only tried to credit the communities for their contribution. “Those who spoke against them..how many Marathi people made big or rich? how many Marathi youths were given bmc contracts? then you should see shah and Agarwal,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shivsena chief Uddhav Thackeray is set to address a press conference eon this matter.
