Business Headlines : Drugs, Gold, Cash and Alcohol – It’s Raining Elections


Ever since the dates for the election were announced on 10th March 2019, in little over a month, till April 15th, the Election Commission has seized has seized 369 million $ (roughly 2,570 crore ₹) worth of cash, liquor, gold, drugs and other goods since then; which is more than double of the 172 million $ confiscated in the last election cycle in 2014, according to a Reuters report. The worst hit states were Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, the National Capital Region of Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. A break-up of these 7 states show that they contribute more than 80% of all seizures of illegal election goodies. One of India’s largest insolvency cases is proving among the most complex to resolve. Once a household name and a successful brand, the Venugopal Dhoot promoted Videocon Group is headed towards bankruptcy, and has 15 companies under its umbrella currently undergoing insolvency proceedings. Claims filed against 2 of the Videocon Group’s largest companies – its flagship Videocon Industries and Videocon Telecommunications are in excess of a staggering 80,000 crore ₹.
