Rupee gains 18 paise against dollar

Mumbai | Rising for the third day, the rupee firmed up by 18 paise to 68.45 against the US dollar in opening trade today on continued selling of the American currency by exporters and banks amid foreign capital inflows.

Forex dealers said besides sustained selling of the greenback, a higher opening of the domestic equity markets boosted the local unit at the interbank forex market. However, the dollar’s strength against some currencies overseas capped the gains. Yesterday, the rupee had gained by 5 paise to end at 68.63 against the US currency.

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose 162.56 points, or 0.42 percent, to hit an all-time high of 38,050.12. The NSE Nifty too scaled a new peak of 11,495.20 in early trade today.

Former CM Tarun Gogoi questions Assam NRC draft

TestHostEntry

Guwahati | Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi while questioning the National Register of Citizen (NRC) draft of Assam said that the draft ‘contains a lot of errors’.

“NRC draft contains lots of errors. Among 40 lakhs people, who have been left out of the list, a vast majority are genuine Indian citizens and many are indigenous people. Voter list could have been a relevant document to prove citizenship, to be a voter one must be an Indian citizen,”said Gogoi while speaking to media.

Gogoi’s statement is one of the latest criticism for the recently drafted Assam NRC draft which excluded around 40 lakh people from the second and the final draft. Earlier West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleged that the government is playing a ‘Divide and Rule’ politics through the implementation of NRC draft which aims to identify illegal Bangladeshi Migrants staying in the Assam.

Attacking the Bjp led Assam government former CM Gogoi alleged that “NRC is not the only issue in Assam. There are many other issues such as lack of employment opportunities and price rise of essential commodities etc.”

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh clarified that the NRC is just and updated draft and not a final list, everyone whose name is not included will get a chance to appeal. Its a totally fair process. Unwarranted accusations are unfortunate.”
