Senior Congress Leader Palaniappan Chidambaram’s opinion on I.N.D.I.A alliance and the BJP have sparked a row.
He said these in view of the 2029 elections, which are four years ahead from now.
P Chidambaram spoke at the launch of a new book called – ‘Contesting Democratic Deficit’ on Thursday. Congress member Salman Khurshid has co-authored it.
Chidambaram said that he is uncertain about the I.N.D.I.A bloc’s future and also said that the BJP is a “formidable machinery”.
Chidambaram said, “The future is not so bright as Mr Mrityunjay Singh Yadav (the second co-author) says. He seems to feel that the INDIA alliance is still intact. I am not sure. Maybe Salman can answer… because he was part of the negotiating team of the INDIA alliance.”

He then said, “If the INDIA alliance is totally intact… I would be very, very happy, but it seems frail. It can be put together. There is still time. There are still events which will unfold…”
He also added, “… in my experience, in my reading of history, there has been no political party which is so formidably organised as the BJP. In every department, it is formidable. It is not (just) another political party…”
“As the author has described from a ringside view, the difficulty of fighting this formidable missionary. That’s the message I get from the book. So the next elections, we don’t know where it will go. 2029 elections may make a decisive turn to strengthen this formidable missionary and then we are beyond repair or the 2029 elections must return us to a full-fledged democracy. The 2029 elections are critical,” Chidambaram added.
BJP has weighed in on Chidambaram’s ‘prediction’.
BJP’s Pradeep Bhandari shared the video of speaking. He wrote, “Congress leader P Chidambaram predicts – ‘Opposition won’t be intact in the future, BJP is a formidable organisation’. Even Rahul Gandhi’s close aides know Congress has no future!”
The Congress and Chidambaram have not responded to any of these remarks made by the BJP.
On 15 May 2025, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition went and visited Ambedkar hostel in Darbhanga, Bihar.
