Digvijaya Singh To Run For Congress’ President?; Rahul Gandhi Unlikely To Contest: Reports

Rahul Gandhi, who had earlier held the post,  is unlikely to contest the party’s presidential elections, the sources said on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijaya Singh is likely to contest for the position of party’s national president, reports cited.

According to sources, Singh will reach Delhi today, where he is likely to meet party president Sonia Gandhi.

The process of filing nominations for the post of party president will commence on September 24 and will conclude on September 30. The polls are scheduled for October 17 and the counting of votes will take place on October 19.

Rahul Gandhi, who had earlier held the post,  is unlikely to contest the party’s presidential elections, the sources said on Tuesday.

Congress sources said the Gandhi scion will not visit the national capital amid the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra during the process of organizational election. The yatra is currently in its Kerala leg and will enter Karnataka on September 29.

Earlier, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday amid growing buzz about a contest in the presidential election in the party, while Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also signalled his desire to contest the election to elect a new party chief.

General Secretary of AICC, Madhusudan Mistry had said those who want to contest for the post of president will need the signatures of 10 delegates adding that no separate polling booth will be made for party leaders on Bharat Jodo Yatris including Rahul Gandhi.

This comes as CBI took over the probe into Sonali Pohgat’s death case from Goa Police on September 15, 2022, and registered an FIR into the case followed by an order for a detailed probe in the case

Panaji: A team of Central Burea of Investigation along with forensic experts arrived at the resort in north Goa where late BJP leader Sonali Phogat stayed before her death.

This comes as CBI took over the probe into Sonali Phogat’s death from Goa Police on September 15, 2022, and registered an FIR into the case followed by an order for a detailed probe in the case. Regarding the same CBI along with a forensic team have arrived at the resort located on the Anjuna beach in North Goa.

Earlier, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that he would request Union Home Minister Amit Shah to hand over the Phogat case to the CBI. On September 12, the Ministry of Home Affairs recommended CBI investigation into Sonali Phogat’s death.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court adjourned till September 26 Curlies restaurant’s plea against the NGT order and extended its interim order on stay against the demolition till the next date of hearing.

The Curlies restaurant was being demolished for allegedly violating Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms but the owners of the restaurant have moved the Supreme Court challenging the demolition action.

Actor-politician Sonali Phogat was found dead in Goa last month. Her family immediately alleged foul play. Following allegations by her family, the Goa Police lodged a case of murder and arrested a couple of Phogat’s associates.

Sonali Phogat, who rose to fame with her TikTok videos, contested the 2019 Haryana election as a BJP candidate but lost to then Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi (he has since joined the BJP). She also appeared in the reality show Bigg Boss in 2020.
