BJP Demands To Impose Section 144 From EC During Bhabanipur Polls

Kolkata : A Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Delegation met the Chief Electoral Officer Aarif Aftab and demanded to impose section 144 CRPC on Monday evening. The demand comes right after the alleged attack on Dilip Ghosh and party workers during the campaign on Monday.

A BJP Delegation led by Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta said, “We want the elections under central security forces. We have also demanded CCTV footages of Bhabanipur Booths.” The BJP delegation also demanded that the CEO Aarif Aftab should not allow Kolkata Police from having direct control to maintain law and order in the constituency on the polling day to ensure free and fair poll.

This is not first such incident being witnessed by BJP. Earlier, MP Arjun Singh was heckled near Hanuman Mandir in Bhawanipore during the day and had to return without campaigning.

Campaigning for bypolls came to an end on Monday rising political temperatures. BJP MP Dilip Ghosh said that wherever there is possibility of high voter turnout, TMC plays terror tactics. He also urged the CEO to ensure that central forces are deployed in each booth and section 144 CRPC is enforced in the entire constituency.

On being asked about Ghosh’s demand for countermanding the by-poll in Bhabanipur, Dasgupta said “We want free and fair polls. What Dilip Ghosh said about countermanding Bhabanipur by-poll till the situation in the constituency returns to normal is based on his apprehension and real perception about the scope of holding free and fair polls.”

Earlier this month, the saffron party also urged the EC to restrain Mamata Banerjee from participating in the Bhabanipur bypoll alleging that she has been funding durga puja committees to woo them.

The Bhabanipur Assembly Bypolls nearing, the campaign at South Kolkata constituency witnessed a mad rush. On Monday, after BJP workers alleged party leader Dilip Ghosh was attacked during the campaign. His security personnel were seen pointing their guns in the air to disperse the crowd.

BJP had planned a campaign at Bhabanipur where Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee is seeking re-election after she had lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in the West Bengal assembly elections.
