โ€˜Killing Research Culture..โ€™: Duty On Chemicals Goes Up to 150%

In the 2024 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman raised customs duty on laboratory chemicals from 10% to 150%. Researchers are facing higher costs, with one faculty member noting that their annual spend on chemicals would now be โ‚น1.5 crore, up from โ‚น45-50 lakh.  โ€œThey are destroying the research culture in the country with their thoughtless actions.โ€, said another.
